External clocks don't autoswitch sample rates like a sound card does and that can be a real pain in the if you work at more then one rate. What is the master clock in your system the Lynx or the Apogee ? My guess is that you should not hear much difference. The only reason you would want a master clock is if you could prove that the clock in the Big Ben is better quality then either of yours. Both of your devices are known to have at least good if not great clocks so you may not be able to hear a difference. It would be good to try it both ways and see if you can tell a difference. The second question is quality of the clock you are using for your master. As it stands you only have two devices so clocking one from the other is simple. It's not the number of devices alone that would call for an external clock, however, more then two is the general rule for needed a clock or clock distribution system. which by the way was the unit replaced with the Apogee converters. But I would have thought that would have been true about the MOTU 24i/o.

Since I'm not using multiple analog to digital devices, my understanding is that an external clock like the Big Ben is not necessary. The clock on the Lynx 2 and AES16 cards is supposed to be quite good. Just 2 cables in and out of the DAW with DB25 connectors on each end is a thing of beauty. I do mostly analog work and have my Apogee AD16/DA16 converters interfaced through a Lynx AES16 card.
